INTRODUCTION

Sandia Grotto of Albuquerque, New Mexico, sponsored annual caving trips to the Slaughter Canyon backcountry caves of Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southern New Mexico. Here are some photos from these trips.

CHIMNEY CAVE

Chimney Cave is a fantastic cave with a spectacular 50-foot rappell. First you crawl through a tiny hole in the ridge and then down-climbing through a tube-like passage. After about 200 feet, the tube drops vertically. Rappell down this tube and you come out in the ceiling of a giant dome-shaped room about 500 feet across.
